HMMWV
The HMMWV, commonly known as the Humvee (the civilian version of which is known as the Hummer), was originally designed as a replacement for the US Army's M151 MUTT light off-road vehicle. Early Humvee models weighed less than 2.5 tons and had minimal crew protection, providing protection only from fragments weighing up to 16 grams. Over time, taking into account the experience of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, several better protected options were developed on the basis of the A2 version, some of which found their way into Ukraine.
In 1979, the US Department of Defense announced a competition for the creation of a new, multi-purpose vehicle with high mobility. The contract for the development of this vehicle was won by AM General, and already in 1981 the first prototypes appeared on tests. After successful tests in In 1983, the first production contract was signed, and from 1985, the HMMWV Hummer officially entered service with the US Army.
Military Hummers are known for their ability to move over any terrain thanks to their high ground clearance and independent suspension of all wheels. The vehicle can overcome deep fords, steep climbs and rough terrain. Its design allows for quick conversion for various tasks: from transporting personnel warehouse and cargo to install weapons and medical equipment.
One of the main technical characteristics is the engine. Initially, the car was equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 diesel engine with a capacity of 150 horsepower. Later, some models were equipped with a 6.5-liter turbodiesel engine, which provided better performance and economy fuel.
Despite the fact that the HMMWV Hummer is gradually being replaced by new models such as the JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle), it remains an important element of the military equipment of many countries around the world. Its influence on the design and concept of military vehicles is felt and today, which testifies to his exceptional role in military history.
