Stryker M1126

The American Stryker M1126 armored personnel carrier has become one of the most important modern vehicles in the mechanized units of the US and partner armies. Its history dates back to the Canadian LAV III, which, in turn, was developed on the basis of the Swiss MOWAG Piranha III armored vehicle. Thanks to its successful design and numerous modifications, this vehicle has become a real platform for many specialized combat vehicles.

The history of the creation of the Stryker M1126

Development began in the late 1990s, when the US command needed a mobile armored personnel carrier capable of being quickly deployed anywhere in the world. The contract with General Dynamics Land Systems provided for the production of more than two thousand vehicles for six brigade combat teams. The first production models of the M1126 Stryker entered service with the US Army in 2003, and by 2014, the main deliveries had been completed. In total, the army received more than 4,400 units of various versions.
The basic version of the armored personnel carrier is equipped with a remotely controlled M151 Protector RWS combat module, which can be fitted with:
a Browning M2 large-caliber machine gun (12.7 mm),
a 40 mm MK.19 automatic grenade launcher.
The stabilization system and electronic sights allow for accurate firing even while moving. For camouflage and cover, the vehicle is equipped with smoke grenade launchers.

Features of the M1126 Stryker APC

The M1126 Stryker stands out among wheeled armored personnel carriers for its high level of armor protection. Its hull provides all-around protection against 14.5 mm caliber bullets and artillery shell fragments. The front projection can withstand even 30 mm shells. Additionally, it is possible to install:
ceramic overlay plates,
steel grilles against cumulative ammunition,
dynamic protection kits.
Considerable attention has been paid to mine protection: a double V-shaped bottom, reinforced fuel tanks, and an automatic fire extinguishing system increase the crew's chances of survival after hitting an IED or mine.
In its standard configuration, the M1126 Stryker has a crew of two – a driver and a commander. The troop compartment is designed to carry nine fully equipped infantrymen. Troops are deployed and picked up via a rear ramp with a hydraulic drive, as well as via upper hatches.

Technical characteristics of the M1126 Stryker

The power plant is a Caterpillar 3126 diesel engine with 350 hp, which provides a speed of up to 97 km/h and a range of over 530 km. The 8×8 wheel formula allows the vehicle to move confidently both on and off-road. The centralized tire inflation system and run-flat technology make the vehicle stable even after wheel damage.

armor – protection against 14.5 mm and 152 mm shell fragments,
armament – M2 machine gun or MK.19 grenade launcher.

Variants based on the M 1126

The Stryker family includes more than ten modifications. Among the most common are:
M1127 – reconnaissance variant,
M1128 MGS – self-propelled gun with a 105 mm cannon,
M1129 – mortar mount,
M1130 CV – command and staff vehicle,
M1132 – an engineering version with mine trawls,
M1133 – a medical evacuation vehicle,
M1134 ATGM – an anti-tank guided missile system with TOW missiles,
M1296 Dragoon – an improved version with a 30 mm cannon.

Use of the M1126 Stryker in Ukraine

Since early 2023, the Stryker M1126 has been in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The US has officially announced the transfer of 90 units in two versions – engineering and transport-combat. The vehicles are already actively used in combat operations, particularly in border areas. They have proven their effectiveness in transporting units, covering infantry, and maneuvering offensive operations.
Among the important innovations is the integration of the FBCB2 combat management system, which allows information to be exchanged with other vehicles and headquarters. The tactical situation is displayed in real time, which significantly increases the effectiveness of interaction on the battlefield.

Despite its relatively light armament, the M1126 Stryker compensates for this with high mobility, protection, and information capabilities.
